Our Students
Horizons Greater Philadelphia currently serves 400 K-8 students from Philadelphia public and charter schools who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Students are identified in collaboration with partner schools connected with each site.
Students are recommended by their teachers, typically the summer after kindergarten and are re-enrolled each consecutive summer through middle school. Preference is given to students with siblings enrolled in the program.
- Eighty-five percent of students attend schools within the Philadelphia School District, and the remaining 15% of students attend schools in the William Penn School District.
- Over 75% of families have household income within 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (SNAP benefit qualifications).
- In 2023, 96% of our students identified as BIPOC, with 88% of students identifying as Black and 6% identifying as two or more races.
- With an unyielding focus on impacting communities with the greatest need, Horizons works closely with partnering public schools to ensure that at least two-thirds of every class are at or below grade level and for all students to be at or below the poverty line. We also aim for a 50/50 gender balance in classes.
